James L. Norrington
Post-Canon

James Norrington is a former Admiral, and a former Commodore, and a former pirate. He's been quite a few things in his relatively short life, most of which didn't sit well with him. He's the son of an Admiral. He's been the Pirate Hunter, the Butcher, and just James. He's fought undead pirates and sea monsters and Davy Jones himself, none of which ever seemed to go very well for him. Case in point: Right now, he's dead. Frankly, he's pretty sure that makes all the previous titles a bit of a moot point, really.

James is in a rough spot right now. His ship and crew were lost in a horrific storm he could have sailed away from or around; he's lost in a sea of self-loathing and blame. He's caught in the mental trap of what-if and if I could go back.... It could lead to some very poor decisions.

Personality
James had always insisted on adhering to the idea of being a "good man". Now, he's not sure he can tell you what that means. It used to mean a certain sense of decorum, of obeying the law and being subservient to duty and protecting those around him. Honestly, that all went a bit tits-up the first time he lost his ship and his entire crew to a horrific and moderately unnatural hurricane whilst chasing an annoying dirty irrelevant pirate, and he never found himself on even ground again.

At his core, though, James has a good heart. He tries to do right by the other people in his life. He can be rigid and unbending when he's decided to be, but also unexpectedly magnanimous when it's least expected - and at the greatest cost to himself. He is afraid of not being as good of a man as he thinks he should be - and in fact is usually not so good as he'd like. He has a wicked and sarcastic sense of humor that he reigns in while in polite company, at least as much as he can, but he's quick to give in to an opportunity when he just can't resist.

He's got love in his heart, and water in the bottom of his boat.

While he is technically dead, or was, there doesn't seem to have been any drastic effect on James. He's an adept swordsman, a decent shot with a musket or pistol (as decent as one can be, anyway), and a fair boxer. He swims well and is an excellent sailor. He has, in fact, every skill that comes from a traditional Naval Military background. (His accent in Spanish is, however, terrible.)
